Final Debate: President Obama Rattles Gov. Romney

President Barack Obama portrayed rival Gov. Mitt Romney as "all over the map" and inexperienced on key national security issues in the third and final debate of the presidential election Monday night in Boca Raton, Fla. Each candidate attempted to paint the other as an untrustworthy commander in chief, but Romney's performance was less aggressive than Obama's, and the governor was often on defense in the 90-minute exchange.
"I know you haven't been in a position to actually execute foreign policy—but every time you've offered an opinion, you've been wrong," Obama said, referencing Romney's initial support for the Iraq war.
The president in general was harshly critical of Romney, and landed a few well-placed zingers. "The Cold War's been over for 20 years," he said in response to Romney's comment from several months ago that Russia is America's primary geopolitical foe.

Jake Finkbonner's miracle cure makes 'Lily of the Mohawks' first Native American saint

Jake Finkbonner was so close to death after flesh-eating bacteria infected him through a cut on his lip that his parents had last rites performed and were discussing donating the 5-year-old's tiny organs.

Jake's 2006 cure from the infection was deemed medically inexplicable by the Vatican, the "miracle" needed to propel a 17th century Native American, Kateri Tekakwitha, on to sainthood. Kateri will be canonized on Sunday along with six other people, the first Native American to receive the honor.
Jake is fully convinced, as is the church, that the prayers his family and community offered to Kateri, including the placement of a relic of the soon-to-be saint on Jake's leg, were responsible for his survival.

some of the accused persons in the Murder of the 4 Uniport students narrates his Story

The 13 suspects arrested in connection with the murder of four UNIPORT students have been charged before a Port Harcourt Magistrate on a five-count charge of conspiracy and murder and were yesterday remanded in prison till the case comes up again in December. The Nigeria Police Force has also dismissed the policeman who was part of the mob that killed the students. The policeman has been identified as Lucky Orji

Now continue to read three suspects' account of what happened that day...

David Ugbaje's recount
“Around 7 am, I left my house. I dressed up to go to work. On my street, I saw a crowd of people with four unclad boys, who were being led into my compound, No. 9, Royal Villa in Omuokiri-Aluu. I said what was the problem and they said the boys were armed robbers. I said that is my compound, let us go and see the person, if he is their member or let them point the particular person, who is their member they were going to look for”.

“I opened the gate, they entered. A crowd of people that I could not control. They entered the compound. They pointed to the room of one of our co-tenants, whose name is Bright. They said one of the boys was staying with Bright. When they got there, Bright’s door was locked. Some people wanted to break the door. They started beating the boys. Very serious. Along the line, two policemen came around. One of the policemen was pleading. The other policeman joined in beating the boys and later said the crowd should hand over the boys to them, but the crowd said ‘no’. ‘We no go gree, we no go gree’.

“As the policemen were leaving, they said whatever this thing was going to bring, you would bear the result. Since I live in the yard, I said if I stayed there and the people were killed, automatically, the house would be in trouble. We are now in trouble. I brought out my belt; I started flogging people and asked them to leave the yard. I was beating the people (crowd) very seriously”.

“One Ikwerre man in the crowd asked why I was beating the crowd for the boys to be moved from our yard. I continued to beat the crowd to carry the boys to where they brought them from. I drove them out of our compound and gate. They injured me in my hand, when I was trying to open the gate”.

“I started flogging for them to leave. There is water in our (house’s) frontage. They went there and soaked the boys (four) inside the water. I discovered that one of the boys was my customer on campus, at the University of Port Harcourt, where I work. He was an Igbo student. I asked the boy: are you a student?
“If you watch the video, you will see me where I held a belt, asking the boy. The boy told me ‘no’, that he was not a student (of UNIPORT). Quite all right, I knew him very well. He once bought slippers from me and used to repair slippers from me. I am a shoemaker at UNIPORT”.

Maybe the boy was afraid to tell me he was a student. There was nothing I could do because of the crowd. If I talked more than that, they could join me with them.

“The beating was going on, here and there. At the end, they finally moved the boys out of my street. I then went out. My wife has just been delivered of a baby.”

On his role in the lynching of the four students, Ugbaje said: “I flogged the boys twice.”

Amadi's account of what happened
“I live at No. 9. Royal Villa in Omuokiri-Aluu. I am from Ikwerre. I work at UNIPORT. I am a printer. I do photocopying and binding. In the morning on that day, I dressed up, as usual, so that I could go to my work. When I came out at the junction, so that I could pick a bike, I saw a crowd of people, with four boys. They were unclad, with tyres on their necks”.

“I shifted a bit, but to verify what was happening, they told me the four boys came to rob. I asked where they were taking them to. They said they were taking them to No. 9, where I live”.

They said they mentioned one of our neighbours. That they came to look for him as well.
“I followed the crowd. Before I reached my estate, they had already reached the house with the four boys in front of my neighbour, Bright, from Ogoni. They said they were looking for one of the boys. Before they came, the back door was locked. Some of the people in the crowd said they were going to break the back door. Others said no, they should leave the door, since Bright was not around. At the end, they started beating the boys”.

“They started beating the boys. In the process of beating the boys, policemen came, but they said no, they were not going to leave the four boys. I called this my neighbour (David Chinasa Ugbaje), with other neighbours, that we were not going to allow that kind of thing to take place in our estate that we would be in trouble.

“This my neighbour (Ugbaje) collected his belt. I collected a small stick, and we started chasing people, flogging everybody, to take the boys out of our yard. We started pushing everybody out, including the four students. They left their tyres, I said they should take their tyres out of the yard and we locked our gate.
“I flogged everybody, including the four boys, for everybody to go out. I beat one of the four boys twice and the other one, I beat once.
Segun Lawal
“My name is Segun Lawal. I am from Osun State. I live in Omuokiri-Aluu. I was in the house, around 6:30 am to 7 am. I am a taxi driver. I saw a crowd and I parked my car outside. I saw a police vehicle coming and I followed the police. I saw four policemen. I saw the policemen enter the gate”.
“As I reached the gate, they were beating the boys. I had to raise my hands up, to defend the boys. If you watch the video, you will see it. I wore blue polo shirt. I started pleading for the crowd not to kill the four boys. They did not listen”.

“The Policemen left immediately. I had to leave. As I left, I went to GRA (Port Harcourt); one of my customers called that I should take him to Obudu Cattle Ranch (in Cross River State).
“I came back on Saturday night (October 6). I was in my house. Policemen came to arrest me. I never had this type of experience. I told the police that I was not around. That I traveled to Obudu. I did not beat the four boys.”

Police arrest three monkeys for theft in Lagos

The popular Ikotun roundabout, a suburb of Lagos was besieged by onlookers over the weekend following the dramatic apprehension of three monkeys and their handlers suspected to be Fulani herdsmen who were allegedly using the monkeys to cause affray and to steal.
Still shocked and baffled on why they should be arrested, the monkeys we learnt resisted being apprehended by the police who tried forcing them into the station.
Angered by their refusal to enter the station, the police threatened to shoot the monkeys who stood at the entrance; entertaining the already bewildered crowd with acrobatic displays.
It was the Ikotun Police Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Akika, a Chief Superintendent of Police who later came out of his office to calm the situation.
The police boss later freed the moneys to their minders and disbanded the already overwhelmed crowd.
It was further gathered that criminal would always use the opportunity to steal from onlookers whenever the monkeys and their minders come out to thrill crowd at the Ikotun roundabout.
Earlier, a resident simply identified as Nurudeen Idowu complained to the police that when he passed through a crowd watching the monkeys, his N5,700 was stolen from his pocket, noting that that the monkeys’ minders were collaborating with criminals to steal from onlookers during the displays.

Another Case Of Lynching: Man Burnt Alive In Warri For Stealing A Neck Chain

This man was alleged to have stolen a neck chain in one of the popular markets and the people who caught him felt the best way to go about the issue was by burning him to death. The faces of the murderers are shown in the video (which we won’t upload and Youtube has even pulled it down). We are hoping the police would swiftly make some arrests as they did in the Aluu4 case.

Four Nigerian Farmers Drag Shell To Dutch court over Oil spills

Shell broke the law by not repairing leaks that destroyed the lands of Niger Delta farmers, a Dutch court heard in a case that could set a precedent for global environmental responsibility.
The four Nigerian farmers, backed by lobby group Friends of the Earth, have brought the Anglo-Dutch oil giant into court thousands of miles away from their homes with a civil suit that could open the door for hundreds of similar cases.
"Shell knew for a long time that the pipeline was damaged but didn't do anything: they could have stopped the leaks," lawyer Channa Samkalden told the court on Thursday, accusing Shell of having "violated its legal obligations".
The case relates to damage caused in 2005 and was initially filed in 2008, demanding that Royal Dutch Shell clean up the mess, repair and maintain defective pipelines to prevent further damage and pay out compensation.
In a landmark ruling, the Dutch judiciary in 2009 declared itself competent to try the case despite protests from Shell that its Nigerian subsidiary was solely legally responsible for any damage.

Aluu 4, Death Sentence For Killers?

So an alleged theft of laptops and phones (sic) has become adequate justification to dispatch fellow human beings to early grave – even in the most despicable manner? So you and I can stroll into a community with friends and be lynched within minutes?

2 EFCC staff jailed fot taking bribe

Two officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Douglas William and Abba Ishaku, who were arraigned on October 17, 2010, before an Abuja High Court presided over by Justice Abubakar Umar on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence were today sentenced to five years imprisonment without an option of fine.
William and Ishaku were sentenced to two years each on counts one and two; and six months each on counts three and four.
The sentences are however to run concurrently.
The two officers were arrested in 2010 in a ‘sting operation’.
Until their arrest, the duo were stationed at the reception of the EFCC headquarters in Wuse, Abuja .
Trouble started for the officers when they allegedly demanded for N100, 000 from Kullima Kachalla, a former Chairman of Bama Local Government in Borno state in 2010, by posing as investigators of the EFCC.
They were alleged to have asked Mr. Kachalla to send them the money in order to bribe other investigators of the Commission to destroy a petition written to the EFCC, which indicted him (the former chairman) for alleged mismanagement of public funds.
During trial, the court was told that Mr. Kachalla had alerted the EFCC of the action of the two accused persons, necessitating an undercover operation, where an EFCC officer, posing as Mr. Kachalla’s representative, arranged a meeting with the accused.
Ishaku, second accused, allegedly called Mr. Kachalla by telephone, asking him to bring the money to the Commission’s office in Wuse, Abuja .
It was in the course of the receipt of the money that the two staff were arrested and subsequently arraigned.
In his ruling, Justice Umar said because the convicts have suffered enough humiliation, their sentence should start from the date of their arraignment being October 18, 2010.

4 Nigerian peace-keepers killed in Darfur

An ambush in Sudan’s western Darfur region killed four Nigerian peacekeepers and wounded eight, the UN-African Union Mission (UNAMID) said on Wednesday.
The attackers struck late Tuesday in the West Darfur state capital El-Geneina, the peacekeeping force said.
“The incident, which involved a Nigerian military patrol, occurred approximately two kilometres (just over a mile) from the mission’s regional headquarters,” the force said.
“UNAMID personnel, who were heavily fired upon from several directions, returned fire. UNAMID and local authorities are working at the scene of the incident.”
UNAMID Force Commander Lieutenant General Patrick Nyamvumba called on the Khartoum authorities to hunt down those responsible.
“The mission condemns in the strongest terms this criminal attack on our peacekeepers who are here in the service of Darfur’s people. I call on the government of Sudan to bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said.
Ethnic minority rebels rose against the Arab-dominated Khartoum government in 2003. In response, the government unleashed state-backed Janjaweed Arab militia in a conflict that shocked the world and led to allegations of genocide.

Romney Crushes Obama in First Presidential Debate

Republican challenger Mitt Romney performed strongly Wednesday in his first presidential debate, putting Barack Obama on the back foot as he reignited hope in his flagging campaign.
Needing a good showing to turn around some poor poll numbers, the former Massachusetts governor went on the offensive from the get-go, hammering the president for economic policies he said had “crushed” America’s middle class.
Romney played the aggressor throughout the 90-minute encounter and appeared far more at ease in the cut-and-thrust of the debate format, which left Obama seeming at times nervous and irritated, even under-prepared.
Obama jumped on Romney’s lack of specifics as the rivals clashed fiercely on taxes and health care reform, but the president stuttered into several of his more detailed answers, while the Republican was crisper and clearer.
“I’m concerned that the path we’re on has just been unsuccessful,” said Romney, fighting for his political life as he trails in the opinion polls with less than five weeks to go before election day.
“The president has a view very similar to the view he had when he ran four years ago, that a bigger government, spending more, taxing more, regulating more — if you will trickle-down government — would work,” Romney said.
“That’s not the right answer for America. I’ll restore the vitality that gets America working again,” he vowed. “Middle-income families are being crushed, and the question is, how to get them going again.”
Obama hit back by suggesting that Romney would bring in $5.4 trillion in tax cuts, particularly geared towards the wealthy, and said Romney hadn’t been clear about what loopholes in the tax system he would close.
“Governor Romney has a perspective that says if we cut taxes skewed toward the wealthy and cut back regulations, we’ll be better off. I have a different view,” Obama said, calling for “economic patriotism.”
Romney hit back hard against Obama’s claims as the tax issue sparked the fiercest clashes of the night.
“Virtually everything he said about my tax plan is inaccurate,” the challenger said. “If the tax plan he described were a tax plan I was asked to support, I would say absolutely not.”
Obama clings to a narrow lead in his bid to defy the omens of a stubbornly sluggish economic recovery and to become only the second Democrat since World War II to win a second term.
Romney, down in almost all the key battleground states that will decide who wins the 270 electoral votes needed to win on November 6, sought a sharp change of momentum in a race that seems to be slipping away from him.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt that Romney won,” Terry Madonna, director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin and Marshall College, told AFP.
“He was more aggressive without being pugnacious or provocative or combative. The president seemed a bit flat. He seemed, I wouldn’t say annoyed at times, but almost disconnected, almost not comfortable.”
Despite the unrest in the Middle East, the debate focused strictly on economic issues. Foreign policy gets its turn in the final of the three presidential debates at the end of the month.
Romney, a multi-millionaire former venture capitalist, was expected to come under scrutiny over his complex offshore tax arrangements, which Democrats have highlighted to press the case that he is indifferent to middle class struggles.
But Obama did not mention these, nor Bain Capital, the controversial Boston firm that Romney co-founded on his way to amassing his huge wealth, nor the most obvious of recent slip-ups by his gaffe-plagued opponent.
The 65-year-old Romney badly needed to reset the election narrative, after a video emerged of him branding 47 percent of Americans as people who pay no taxes and see themselves as “victims” who depend on government handouts.
The 51-year-old president was marking his 20th wedding anniversary on Wednesday and began the debate with a shout-out to First Lady Michelle Obama, apologizing for the unromantic setting.
“Congratulations to you, Mr. President, on your anniversary. I’m sure this is the most romantic place you could imagine, here with me,” joked his adversary in a rare moment of levity as the duel began.
Summing up, Romney said that if Obama was re-elected it would usher in an era of falling household incomes and chronic joblessness.
“If the president is re-elected will you see a middle-class squeeze,” Romney said. “You will see chronic unemployment — 43 straight months with unemployment above eight percent.”
Obama had countered with accusations that Romney has no specific plans to create jobs or move the country forward other than the failed Republican policies that he said got the country in trouble in the first place.
“You know, four years ago, I said that I’m not a perfect man, and I wouldn’t be a perfect president, and that’s probably a promise Governor Romney probably thinks I’ve kept,” Obama said in his conclusion.
“I also promised I would fight every single day on behalf of the American people, the middle class and all of those striving. I’ve kept that promise, and if you will vote for me, then I promise I’ll fight as hard in a second term.”
Several national polls released before the debate showed a tight race, with Obama ahead by a few points. Polls of the key swing states that will decide the election give the president a clearer advantage.
Here are some of the key quotes of the night.
UNACCUSTOMED MODESTY
Obama: “You know, four years ago, I said that I’m not a perfect man, and I wouldn’t be a perfect president, and that’s probably a promise Governor Romney probably thinks I’ve kept.”
FEEL THE FEAR
Romney: “No question in my mind, if the president is re-elected you will see a middle class squeeze … You will see chronic unemployment — 43 straight months with unemployment above 8 percent.”
FLATTERY WILL GET YOU EVERYWHERE
Moderator: “We’ve barely got three minutes left. I’m not going to grade the two of you and say your answers have been too long or I’ve done a poor job.”
Obama: “You’ve done a great job, Jim.”
THE ZINGER
Romney: “Mr. President, you are entitled to your own airplane, your own house as president, but not to your own facts.”
CHURCH AND STATE
Romney: “That statement says we are endowed by our creator to pursue happiness as we choose … We are a nation that believes we’re children of the same God and we care for those with difficulties.”
SARCASM BITES
Obama: “He now says he’ll replace Obamacare and ensure all the good things in it will be in there … Is the reason that Governor Romney is keeping all these plans to replace secret because they are too good?”
MODERATING THE MODERATOR
Obama: “Now, the last point I would make, before …”
Moderator: “Two minutes is up, sir.”
Obama: “No, I think — I had five seconds before you interrupted me.”
AGAIN WITH THE SARCASM
Obama: “So the question is, does anybody out there think that the big problem we had is that there was too much oversight and regulation of Wall Street (prior to the 2008 financial crisis)? Because, if you do, then Governor Romney is your candidate.”
OBAMA FAMILY VALUES
Obama: “My grandmother died three days before I was elected president. She was fiercely independent. Only with a high school education, started as a secretary and ended up being vice president of a local bank.”
ROMNEY FAMILY VALUES
Romney: “Look, I have five boys, I’m used to people saying something that isn’t always true and keep on saying it hoping ultimately I will believe it. That is not the case.”
BIG OIL
Obama: “Now, does anybody think that ExxonMobil needs some extra money, when they are making money every time you go to the pump? Why wouldn’t we want to eliminate that? Why wouldn’t we eliminate tax cuts for corporate jets?”
THE PAIN IN SPAIN
Romney: “Spain spends 42 percent of their total economy on government. We’re now spending 42 percent of our economy on government. I don’t want to go down the path of Spain. I want to put more Americans to work.”
MORALITY TALE
Romney: “It’s frankly not moral for my generation to keep spending massively more than we take in, knowing burdens will be passed on to the next generation and paying interest and principal all their lives.”
BROKEN RECORD
Romney: “The president said he would cut the deficit in half. Unfortunately, he doubled it. Trillion dollar deficits for the last four years.”
WHAT’S HE HIDING?
Obama: “Well, for 18 months he’s been running on this tax plan, and now five weeks before the election, he says his big bold idea is ‘never mind’.”
THE TRUMP CARD
Obama: “We do have a difference when it comes to definitions of small businesses … Donald Trump is a small business. Donald Trump doesn’t like to think of himself as small anything.”
SACK THE MUPPET
Romney: “I’m sorry Jim. I’m gonna stop the subsidy to PBS. I’m gonna stop other things. I like PBS. I like Big Bird. I actually like you too.”

Seme-Border Customs Arrests Couple With Drugs Concealed In Their Car Bonnet

Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service at Seme Border have arrested a couple (names withheld) with 30 compressed blocks of weed suspected to be cannabis valued at N3.2 million, the Customs has said.
The Customs said the couple was arrested while attempting to bring the drugs into the country from the Republic of Benin through Seme Border.
Comptroller Othman Abdu Saleh, the Customs Area Controller of Seme Border was quoted as saying that Customs operatives were able to detect the prohibited substance concealed in the bonnet and beneath the rear seat of the car where the driver’s wife and a baby were seated through intelligence and uncompromising enforcement.
Othman said the suspects were arrested while in a Kia Sephia car with Lagos registration number KSF160AG.
He said the car used to convey the drug was intercepted at Gbaji check point where the concealed blocks of compressed weeds were discovered.
He said the arrest and seizure is in furtherance of his resolve to strengthen the existing inter service tie between the customs at the border and other government agencies.
The suspects have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
On resumption, Othman had visited sister agencies and assured them of increasing customs co-operation in preventing government revenue loss and importation or exportation of any item or commodity in the import and export prohibition list.
He has warned persons involved in any form of illegality at the border to desist from doing so.

Live Mites and Eggs found inside a Man's ear.

A man whose ear had itched for two months turned out to have mites crawling in his ear canal, a new case report says.

The 70-year-old man in Taiwan also reported feeling a sense of fullness in the right ear, but had no hearing impairment, ringing in his ears or discharge.

Upon looking into the man's ear canal, doctors discovered mites and mite eggs, belonging to a species identified as the house-dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, according to a report of the man's case

published Thursday (Oct. 4) in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Having mites in one's ear, a condition formally called otoacariasis, is pretty rare, said Dr. Ian Storper, director of otology at the New York Head. & Neck Institute at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. The video

the Taiwan doctors captured of the mites crawling in the man's ear shows the typical swelling of the ear tissue, and debris in the ear canal that is found in such infections, he said.

"It's much more common to see a cockroach in the ear," Storper said, estimating that he's seen a few dozen cases of cockroaches, but only two cases involving mites. Most of the time, the cockroach is dead

inside the ear canal when the patient comes in — the difficulty that insects have in walking backward may account for their inability to get out. If it's alive, the patient is likely to report hearing a buzzing sound, along with their pain, he said. Dr. Richard Nelson, vice chair of emergency medicine at Ohio State University WexnerMedical Center, said that he's learned — after seeing cases of

mosquitos, gnats, and at least a dozen cockroaches in ears

over his three decades in medicine — that sometimes it's better to tell the patient about

the bug after it has been extracted.

In the first cockroach-in-the-ear case he saw as a medical resident, the female patient became so agitated that he thought he might have to sedate her in order to remove the insect.

"She was really freaked out," Nelson said, and he's had other patients who, upon being told

about the creature lurking in their ear canals, start screaming or running around —

which makes them very hard to treat.

"Now, I just say, I think I see the problem, I'm going to put some stuff in your ear," and tell

them about it after the cockroach is out, he said. Some patients are surprisingly calm upon hearing the news, and one patient even told him he'd had a cockroach in his ear

before, he said. Nelson also said he now sometimes knows, before he looks in the ear, what he's likely to see. "Patients with cockroaches in their ear always show up at 2 a.m. — they wake up with sudden onset of ear pain," because the bug crawled in while they were sleeping, he

said.

Typically, treatment involves irrigating the ear canal — oil, alcohol, or an anesthetic might

be used. The irrigation may flush out the bug, or tiny forceps might be used to pull out the critter.

"It's very important to pull out the whole thing," Storper said.

Sometimes, he said, a bug's legs may get stuck or fall apart, eaving leggy bits behind. "If you leave legs, you can get a bacterial infection. They're dirty, they've been crawling everywhere," he said.

In the Taiwan case, the doctors reported treating the patient with eardrops containing an antifungal agent, an

antibacterial agent, an anti- inflammatory medicine and an anti-mite medication. The typical treatment for mites in the ear is an anti-mite drug, Storper said, and the other drugs likely helped reduce the

risk of other infections.

Two months after treating the Taiwan man, the doctors

followed up with him and reported that his symptoms had completely resolved. In

most cases, pain and other symptoms go away within a few days of treatment, Storper

said.
