Gunmen kill 2 policemen in Imo

Two policemen were shot and killed by unidentified gunmen at a check point close to Nkwo Orji junction, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State.

It was also feared that the hoodlums removed the AK 47 rifle of one of the slain policemen before they escaped from the scene.

An eye witness, who spoke to Vanguard on grounds of anonymity, said the rampaging gunmen stormed the police checkpoint on a motorbike and shot the two policemen at point blank range.

He said: "There were about four policemen on duty at the time of the attack and they positioned themselves on each side of the busy Owerri-Okigwe federal highway. The armed men made straight for the policemen and shot them at close range."

He said the gunshot jolted everybody in the vicinity, causing passengers and their drivers to abandoned their vehicles and scamper for safety.

He said:"One of the policemen died on the spot, while the other who was badly injured, was quickly rushed to a nearby private hospital for immediate medical attention but he died shortly after."

The eyewitness said he was stunned that colleagues of the slain policemen on the other side of the road, quickly disappeared from the scene and into safety without firing a shot at the armed men.

Another female commuter fumed that "if the policemen were conscious of their official assignment, they would not have easily fallen prey to the hoodlums."

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of Imo State Police Command, Mr. Linus Nwaiwu, confirmed the story but added that the Command would do everything possible to fish out the perpetrators of the sordid crime and bring them to book.
