A 53-year-old heartless woman, Rachael Abodunrinde, was on Monday
remanded in prison custody by an Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court for
allegedly killing a 10-month-old baby with a stone.
Chief Magistrate Adelegan Johnson gave the order that Rachael be
remand pending the receipt of legal advice from the Director of Public
Prosecution in the state Ministry of Justice.
The Prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Zakari, had earlier told the court that
the mother of the boy, Mrs Iyabo Fadahunsi, left the baby in her room to
clean the compound when she suddenly heard a strange sound.
Zakari said the baby’s mother rushed to the room only to meet the
accused allegedly smashing a big stone on the head of her child, leading
to the baby’s instant death.
He said the accused committed the offence on April 30 at about 12.50
p.m. at Iju, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The offence, he said, was contrary to and punishable under section
319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of
Nigeria, 2006.
The accused is a relative of the baby’s father.
The case was adjourned till June 21.
