Hisbah or sharia enforcer/Police in Kano were on the rampage on Wednesday destroying anything intoxicant. Consequently, about 240,000 bottles of beer, over 8,000 litres of local brew called "Burukutu" and 320,000 cigarettes were publicly destroyed, in enforcing Islamic law in the city of Kano.
It is believed that by the destruction of these substances, behaviour deemed "immoral" in the area will adhere to Islamic behaviour.
During the bottle-breaking ceremony, supporters gathered outside the Hisbah headquarters in Kano and at the shout of "Allahu Ahkbar" (God is Great) large bulldozer smashed the bottles with cranky sound like teeth-gnashing in hell.
Hisbah ogah, chief Aminu Daurawa said by the bottle-breaking ceremony he had
"the ardent hope this will bring an end to the consumption of such prohibited substances".
"We hereby send warning to unrepentant offenders that Hisbah personnel will soon
embark on an operation into every nook and corner of (Kano) state to put an end to the sale and consumption of
alcohol and all other
intoxicants," Daurawa said.
It is worthy of note that kano is populated by both Christians and Muslim, even unbelievers also form what makes Kano a large city in Nigeria.
The question is, will Hisbah's action not send wrong signal to non muslin who enjoy drinking alcohol?
Religion laws should be restricted to the doorsteps of the believers alone, not in the wild where all kinds of people hobnob.
