Gunmen kill policeman, landlord in Yenagoa

The peace of Yenagoa the Bayelsa State capital was again assaulted Sunday night as suspected cultists shot dead a policeman and his landlord.

Also, a man identified as a co-tenant in the premises housing the deceased policeman was seriously injured.

The tragic which incident occurred at the serene Akenfa suburb of the state capital it was gathered caused panic among residents and shop owners many of whom scampered for safety as the sound of gun rent the air.

The killing is coming on the heels of last week killing at Opolo in which a middle aged man was gunned down by unknown gunmen and the daring attack on a public hang out at Ogbia where an ex militant was reportedly shot dead by some unknown gun wielding youths.

The latest attack Sunday night has further heightened fear of insecurity in the capital city.
The victim of the latest killing, a police traffic warden it was learnt was attached to the C Division, Akenfa and was a tenant to the landlord who was also killed in the violent attack.

Though the motive for the attack could not be immediately ascertained but sources told Vanguard that the deceased might have been victims of circumstance.

It was gathered that two rival gangs were locked in shoot out close to the house allegedly housing the policeman and owned by the landlord.

The deceased persons were said to have walked into the scene in an attempt to escape from the scene of the shooting and were cut down by the invaders bullets.

The remains of the deceased persons have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre mortuary while the injured victim is receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

Contacted the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eguavoen Omokpai, an Assistant Superintendent of Police confirmed the incident.

He said a traffic police man and his landlord lost their lives in the attack while another youth was severely injured adding that the matter was being investigated. No arrest he noted had been made.

Meanwhile, the recent upsurge in violent killing in Yenagoa and its environs is gradually crippling night life in the Bayelsa State capital as most residents are now compelled to retire home early.

This was the scenario about three years ago when the then bubbling night life in the capital city was almost grounded in the wake of the violent clashes between suspected rival cult gangs who held the state capital hostage.

No fewer than six persons have been reportedly killed in the last four weeks in separate attacks in different parts of Yenagoa and its environs by unknown gunmen.
