Chairman of the House Committee on Justice, Ali Ahmed
and Ralph Igbokwe of the Nigeria House of Representatives had on Thursday sponsored a motion seeking immunity for lawmaker against civil or criminal prosecution for their acts in office as representaives. If the bill scale through, it would grant lawmakers immunity from standing
trial for civil and criminal charges for acts committed in the course of
performing their official functions.
The immunity enjoyed by the president and governor as enshrined in the constitution has been the avenue some corrupt political office holders have commited crimes against this country by looting the treasury and doing all sorts of thing.
Average Nigerians feel that at some point, the executive should answer to charges involving graft rather than hiding under immunity
However, the House of Rep despiration to enjoy immunity may not be far from the political crises that may result in 2015 presidential election. They may be preparing themselves against the posibility of using the EFCC or Police to harass them if they fail to obey or do certain thing in the course of advancing certain political agenda
Whatever it is, the move for immunity the house represetatives is seeking to do now is self serving, it is not to the best interest of Nigerians
.
