Crash Pilot Survives 17 Hours Floating in Lake Huron

A New York pilot has miraculously been rescued after his small plane crashed in Lake Huron, leaving him to swim and drift in the water without a life jacket for over 17 hours.

Officials say Michael Trapp, 42, was buoyed by an unsinkable sense of humor.

"He never lost his sense of humor," said Sid Schock, the Harbor Beach police chief. "The first thing he said was, 'If a 13-year-old girl could swim across the English Channel, I can survive overnight.'"

Trapp, from Gouverneur, N.Y., was flying from New York to Chippewa Falls, Wis., when a fuel problem led him to report a mayday before he lost contact with the Federal Aviation Administration around 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

"He ended up stalling the airplane into the lake, with the engine not running. Upon impact, the airplane flipped over," said Huron County Chief Kelly Hanson in a statement. "He then escaped the airplane as it sank seconds later."

Trapp's plane crashed 17 miles from Michigan's shore, according to the Coast Guard, and he swam 15 miles before rescue

Two suspected lovers die after inhaling generator smoke

A man and a woman, believed to be lovers, are believed to have died after inhaling generator fumes in their house in Port Harcourt, neighbours said on Tuesday.

Policeman Runs Amock, Kills Colleague.

It was a string of bizarre occurrences on Monday: a policeman went amock in Abia State killing his colleague and a Lagos politician drowned in the lagoon in what looked like suicide.

In Umuahia, the Abia State capital, a police corporal, Clement Amachi, from Ohanku in Ukwa East Local Government Area of the state, was shot dead at close range by another corporal, Umaru Mohammed.

And in Lagos, life came to a screeching halt for Mr. Al-Mustaim Alade Abaniwonda, 56, who only last April was the Lagos East senatorial candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), when he allegedly jumped into the Lagoon at Leventis Bus Stop, Marina and got drowned for yet-to-be-ascertained causes.

His name was among the 10 submitted to the Presidency by the state PDP after the April polls for ministerial consideration. But he was not appointed.

The Lagos State Police Command has said that it has commenced investigation into the death of Abaniwonda purported to have committed suicide by drowning.

At the site of the incident Tuesday, the marine police and some private divers who were engaged to recover his corpse were still combing the seabed in search for the body.

As at press time, THISDAY gathered that after several hours of fruitless search, his family went back home to await the recovery of the corpse from the divers.

Simply identified as Wasiu, the deceased's driver had disclosed that they were coming from a bank on Lagos Island when the deceased said he needed to use the toilet.

He claimed that all the entreaties he made for his boss to exercise patience till they get to the office located on Broad Street were ignored.

He said that was all he knew until he heard people shouting over the plunge his boss took.

Faulting claims that his boss committed suicide, the driver said when he got to the lagoon, the deceased was still struggling but later got sucked into the water.

The driver has since been arrested by the police officers attached to the Marine Police Division.

However, one of the mobile toilet operators said they were on ground when the deceased walked up to them demanding the use of one of the mobile toilets.

While they went to get the key and water for him, they claimed he left and walked towards the lagoon.

According to the report from a senior police officer, who claimed anonymity, the deceased took off his jacket, wristwatch and wallet before making for the lagoon.

He added that when he dived into the water, the mobile toilet operators threw a floater and tyre at him but the deceased declined to use them.

Rather, he was said to have moved deeper into the lagoon, obviously declining their help.

Also efforts to bring him out when a flying boat came around were aborted as he was said to have hidden from view on sighting the rescue team.

THISDAY gathered that the deceased's son, who came to the scene of the incident with his siblings, disclosed that nothing in his father's mood suggested that he was about to commit suicide.

He added that their mother even celebrated her birthday the previous day and he was cheerful.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Jinadu Samuel, a deputy superintendent of police, told THISDAY that efforts were still being made to recover the body.

Meanwhile, in the shooting incident in the Abia Government House, Mohammed and Amachi were attached to the security team of Governor Theodore Orji and had always ridden together in the pilot security van that leads the governor's convoy.

THISDAY learnt that the shooting occurred shortly after midnight when Mohammed, who ought to have left for Police College, Oji River on Monday for promotional training course went to the house of the deceased at Okpara Avenue, GRA, knocked on his door and shot him dead immediately the door was opened for him.

But it did not end there. Eyewitnesses said that after the killing, the trigger happy officer embarked on a shooting spree firing at every direction and shouting "if you are a soldier come out, everybody come out" thereby sending his fellow security officers scampering for safety.

From Okpara Avenue end of the Government House, Mohammed, who was dressed in a flowing gown and turban, shot his way into the main gate of Government House targeting soldiers and policemen stationed there.

"It appeared his (Mohammed's) aim was to kill as many officers as he could," said a police officer who witnessed the incident, adding that "everybody avoided being hit by the flying bullets".

While the shooting lasted, residents of Government Reservation Area (GRA) were forced to end their sleep as sounds of gunfire tore through the still air of the night. There was panic in the Government House and all the surrounding areas.

What could have been carnage was averted when Mohammed was eventually overpowered by a courageous constable, but instead of heeding his call for assistance to subdue Mohammed, other policemen and soldiers were firing.

Afraid of being killed, the officer wrestling with Mohammed abandoned him and ran for his own life. Having got a respite, Mohammed was said to have sprang up and grabbed his AK 47 and started another round of shootings but he was finally incapacitated when bullets hit him on the chest and back.

Head of Accident and Emergency Department of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, Dr. Uche Aguocha, told newsmen that Mohammed was brought to the hospital unconscious.

Aguocha said the deceased, whose body was brought in and deposited at the FMC mortuary was brought in dead, having been shot in the head, adding that the dead officer was shot at a very close range with the intention to kill him instantly.

"From the type of injury on the one who was shot in the head, there was no chance of survival," he said.

The state PPRO, Geoffrey Ogbonna, an assistant superintendent of police, confirmed the incident, saying that the police had launched investigations into the matter.

At a press briefing at the Government House, a media aide to the governor, Mr. Ugochukwu Emezue, said that what happened was a "personal matter" between the officers concerned, adding that Governor Orji was already addressing the issue.

He said that Mohammed's killing was a condemnable act and that government had commiserated with the family of the deceased.

According to him, the governor was holding a security meeting with the relevant security agencies to address the situation.

Edo attorney general’s wife abducted by gunmen

Barely a week after a medical doctor with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) was kidnapped by gunmen, the wife of the Edo State attorney general and commissioner for justice, Florence Obayuwana, was yesterday morning kidnapped by gunmen in front of their house located in Ohonre Quarters, Off Adolor Road in Benin City.

Eyewitness account disclosed to NEXT that the suspected kidnappers blocked the vehicle of the school teacher in front of her family house gate, shot sporadically into the air to scare passersby, before whisking her away in their own car.

Her husband, Osagie Obayuwana, who confirmed the abduction to NEXT said: "I wasn't around when the incident happened but I was told that she was accosted at the gate; they forced her out of her car into their own vehicle. They used their vehicle to accost hers. They have contacted me through her phone and they are demanding for a ransom of N20 million before they would release her," Mr Obayuwana said.

It was, however, gathered that students of Adolor College, where Mrs Obayuwana teaches, took to the streets of Benin City yesterday, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of their teacher.

Reacting to the incident, the state chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Philip Ugbodaga, condemned the abduction of the wife of the state attorney general, calling for her unconditional release by her abductors.

Edo Police spokesperson, Peter Ogboi, could not be reached for comments, as several calls to his cell phone went unanswered, but a senior police officer in the State Police Command said that they were on the trail of the suspected kidnappers.

» Corporal arrested over alleged sale of baby in Rivers

Port Harcourt – A police Corporal in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Command (names withheld) has been arrested over the theft of a five- month-old baby and selling it for N250,000 to a childless Rivers woman, who is married to a foreigner.

Vanguard gathered that the policeman, who allegedly connived with four others, instigated a family friend of the baby's parents (called Anthony) to steal the child  and allegedly assured that he (policeman) would ensure that he was not arrested.

Anthony had presented himself as a top official of a motherless babies' home in the city to the buyer of the baby, while the policeman, who impersonated an officer of the home, said he would sign all the necessary papers to procure the baby from the home. The woman had requested to adopt a child.

Before the agreed day, Anthony and the policeman had presented the photograph of the baby to be "adopted" to the buyer, who entertained the group lavishly, while putting finishing touches to her travel papers to exit Nigeria with the child.

To actualise the plan after collecting N250, 000, Anthony, it was learnt, visited the business shop of the child's mother on Ojoto Street, Diobu and pretended to be the good family friend by offering to play with the baby girl, while the woman typed the documents brought by him.

But shortly afterwards, he bolted with the child. On finishing typing the document, the woman could not locate Anthony and the child prompting her to raise alarm and report the incident to the police station in Diobu. Anthony was picked up at his residence where he was cooling off with some bottles of beer "for a job well done".

Trial of UAE bloggers set to resume

The trial of five bloggers who called for democratic reforms in the United Arab Emirates is set to resume on Monday.

Ahmed Mansoor, Nasser bin Ghaith, Fahad Salim Dalk, Ahmed Abdul Khaleq and Hassan Ali al-Khamis stand accused of "publicly insulting" top officials in the UAE after being arrested in April. On Sunday, four international human rights groups - Amnesty International, the Arabic Network or Human Rights Information (ANHRI), Front Line Defenders, and Human Rights Watch (HRW) - released a statement condemning the trial of the five activists and called for their release.

"UAE authorities should drop charges against five activists arrested after they called for democratic reforms," the statement read.

Ahmed Mansoor, an engineer and human rights advocate, and Nasser bin Ghaith, an economist and lecturer at Sorbonne University in the UAE, are being charged with using the site, UAE Hewar (Dialogue) to "conspire against the safety and security of the state in association with foreign powers," according to rights groups.

Mansoor also faces charges for inciting others and calling for demonstrations. In March, he supported a petition signed by more than 130 people demanding an elected parliament with legislative powers.

Gamal Eid, director of ANHRI, said it was not only the five bloggers being targeted by the arrests. "They arrested the five to send a message to other online activists that it's not allowed to talk about democracy [in the UAE]," Eid said.

"We feel it's a step back for freedom of speech in the UAE because it's an accusation against bloggers and activists ... because of what they wrote on [an online] forum about democracy. It's not a crime to talk about reform and democracy," Eid told Al Jazeera.

The arrests of the five men is one of the first incidents in recent years when people have been tried for things they've written or said, and that has rights groups worried.

"It shows a dramatic increase of repression by the Emirati government and intolerance for any dissent," said Samer Muscati, a researcher at HRW focusing on the UAE, speaking to Al Jazeera.

In 2007, two reporters on the UAE's English-language Khaleej Times newspaper were sentenced to prison for "libel". Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai emirate, issued a decree that journalists shouldn't be jailed for their work.

However, since the wave of uprisings in the Arab world began in late 2010, some Arab leaders have sought to pre-emptively block any forms of dissent by targeting activists and dissidents.

Muscati said that the uprisings had made "these authoritarian governments realise that their grip on power isn't as strong as they think."

After the Jurists Association and the Teachers Association supported calls for reform in April, their elected boards were both disbanded and replaced by people appointed by the state.

Rights groups have reported threats against some of the defendants and condemned the "intimidating online and satellite television campaign" that has tried to paint the men as religious extremists and foreign agents.
A Facebook page denouncing "Ahmed Mansour and his gang" has nearly 30,000 supporters.

The government blocks a number of websites that discuss politics and government, like Hewar, Muscati said. "That's the irony; that other sites that viciously attack the activists are allowed to continue."

Jungle Justice: 2 robbers lynched in Imo.

Two suspected armed robbers were in the early hours of yesterday roasted alive in Owerri by an angry mob that caught them in the act.

Vanguard investigations revealed that the roasted robbers and their colleagues, now at large, raided some residents of Oparanozie Street, Owerri, about three days earlier.

One of the residents of the area, who pleaded strict anonymity, told Vanguard that the gangsters wanted a repeat performance of their deadly act but met a stiff resistance.

He said: "The armed robbers had a field day the first time they struck. They stole people's personal effects and ended up raping innocent girls in the area.

"The gangsters wanted a repeat performance of their deadly act but met a stiff resistance from the residents."
The resident said the armed robbers struck again Tuesday morning at about 2am and an alarm was  raised, which attracted the residents.

The angry residents gave the invading hoodlums a hot chase, caught two of them and immediately set them ablaze.

The two charred bodies were still smouldering when Vanguard visited the Edede Street/Royce Road junction scene of the incident at about 8.30am.

The Police Public relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Linus Nwaiwu, appealed to youths to stay away from crime so as not to end up in a similar way.

The PPRO, however, condemned the habit of lynching people for any alleged crime, adding that the ideal thing would be to hand over suspects to the police for proper investigation.

African Mango, (Irvingia Gabonensis) - Weight Loss Medical Miracle?

The 62-cent African weight loss discovery America's billion-dollar diet industry doesn't want you to know about

So Safe — studies show it actually reduces LDL cholesterol and dangerous triglycerides

So Effective — it's proven to shed 8.9 pounds and 2 inches of belly fat in just 28 days

So Inexpensive — it's just 62 cents per serving; less than a sugary soda at McDonald's

Move Over Weight Watchers, an exotic super fruit called 'African Mango' is quickly becoming America's hottest new way to lose weight.

And much to the chagrin of the nation's $40 billion-dollar diet industry, which sells outrageously expensive surgical procedures and drugs that have done little, if anything, to trim America's ever-growing collective waistline.

Indeed, interest in the use of African Mango extract (irvingia gabonensis) as a safe, effective and inexpensive weight loss alternative surged after Dr. Mehmet Oz called it, mentioning no specific brand, a "breakthrough supplement" and a "miracle in your medicine cabinet" on his Emmy Award-winning The Dr. Oz Show, which aired on September 13, 2010.

Similarly, the show's leading medical contributor, Dr. Tanya Edwards, M.D., called African Mango extract a "miracle pill" after it helped her lose 7 pounds in less than a month without making any changes to her diet or exercise routine. Click here to read her report.

Subjects Lost an Astonishing 3,990% More Weight

According to a recent study published in the scientific journal Lipids in Health and Disease, men and women supplementing with African Mango extract for just 28 lost an astonishing 3,990% more weight than those taking a placebo (8.9 lbs vs. 0.22 lbs).

Beyond the weight loss, the volunteers taking African Mango extract 30 minutes before meals lost a stunning average of 2.4 inches from their waistlines as well as 1.8 inches from their hips — and their bad LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and glucose levels all plummeted.

What Is African Mango, and How Does It Work?

Despite the recent frenzy surrounding African Mango and its ability to cause safe weight loss, the fruit has actually been used as a diet aid for centuries in Cameroon, Africa.

The brightly-colored tropical fruit is native to Cameroon's west-coastal rainforests. African Mango, or Bush Mango, differs from other mango fruits in that it produces a peculiar seed, which natives of Cameroon refer to as Dikka nuts.

For hundreds of years, an extract from the seeds called irvingia gabonensis has been used among Cameroon villagers for its wide-ranging medicinal benefits, which range from reducing and preventing obesity to lowering cholestrol to regulating blood sugar to treating infections.

Americans Swear by African Mango's Slimming Benefits

Erin Bates, a 34-year-old mother of two from Longmont, Colorado, says she lost nearly 30 pounds in 4 weeks as a result of using African Mango extract before meals.

"I didn't even know about African Mango until hearing about it on the news" says Bates. "It had been almost a year since I gave birth to my son, and I was still 30 pounds overweight. I figured if so many other people were seeing success using African Mango, it would be worth trying."

Bates says she began to lose weight almost immediately. "After the first week, I had lost 11 pounds — I thought something was wrong with my scale," says Bates with a laugh. "The pounds were falling off so fast that I actually got excited to step on the scale each morning to see how much more I'd lost."

According to Bates, African Mango is the most effective weight-loss product she's ever used. "I've tried other things like Alli, but I didn't really notice a difference. The change I'm seeing with African Mango is shocking. It's like liposuction in a bottle," says Bates with a laugh.

David Jeffery, a 36-year-old journalist from Columbia, Missouri, says he's experienced similar weight-loss success with African Mango.

"After just two weeks of using African Mango, I lost 22 pounds of fat, including a lot of fat off my gut," says Kennedy. "I'm amazed at how fast the weight is falling off me. Already my jean size has dropped from 36 to 34."

Beware of Low-Quality African Mango from China

With the recent publicity and fanfare surrounding African Mango, it's no surprise that sites are popping up all over the Internet claiming to offer African Mango at bargain-basement prices.

However, according to a recent report published by Consumer Laboratories, Inc., an independent testing organization that reviews health and wellness supplements, a lot of these products, which are often imported from China, have less African Mango than indicated by their labels and have other ingredients and artificial fillers.

July 3, 2011 Update: How To Find a Quality African Mango Product

With dozens, if not hundreds, of African Mango products being sold online, selecting one that's worth your money can be a difficult and confusing endeavor.

According to consumer and Better Business ratings, the 100% Pure African Mango product is considered one of the most effective and trustworthy, with laboratory tests certifying the product's potency and quality.

The website offers a 100% risk-free trial of the product, with each serving working out to be just 62 cents — less than what you'd spend on a small sugary softdrink at McDonald's.

What's more, each an every order of Pure African Mango is a one-time-only transaction. In other words, there are absolutely no reoccurring charges or hidden offers.
