Northern Indiana Public Service Co. says at least 2,300 feet of wire have been taken in more than a dozen thefts since Sunday in a neighborhood near downtown Gary. That's an estimated 600 pounds of copper.
Utility spokesman Nick Meyer says that stealing the lines are not only dangerous for the thieves, but they are causing power outages for residents. NIPSCO is urging anyone who sees suspicious activities to call police.
Higher prices for metal in recent years mean copper can sell for more than $4 a pound at scrapyards.
