The police in Lagos State have arrested an Ibadan-based politician for allegedly defrauding an octogenarian to the tune of N12 million.
The accused, Mr Isaac Akinkunmi, was arraigned before Lagos Island magistrates' court and had been granted bail, while the case was adjourned till September 14.
The council chairmanship aspirant was accused of defrauding 87-year-old retired lawyer, Mr Adedapo Adediran, over a property in Ogbomoso area of Oyo State.
The police investigating officer, Augustine Emmanuel, said the suspect had, on July 15, 2010 collected N12 million from the man.
In the charge sheet, the accused was said to have collected the money on the premise that he would "forfeit the structure erected on the landed property, knowing well that the property was illegally acquired."
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the suspect was arrested by the police after failing to refund the N12 million that he allegedly collected from the man.
The suspect had reportedly agreed to refund the money, but reneged and refused invitation by the police, before he was eventually arrested at his Ogbomoso home
The presiding magistrate, Justice A.O. Adedayo, granted the bail on the condition of provision of two sureties for N1 million each.
