70-year-old man, son charged with killing professor

A 70-year-old man, Jimoh Ayeni, on Thursday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court for the alleged murder of a professor.
Ayeni of Ose-Egbeda Camp in Emure-Ekiti Local Government Area of Ekiti State was charged along with his 28-year-old son, Haruna Ayeni, for allegedly killing 68-year-old Prof. Clement Ayeni, News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The accused were arraigned on three counts of conspiracy to murder, hitting the victim with a stick on the head and flogging the professor with a cane until he died.
The offence, according to the prosecutor, is punishable under section 516 (a) of the criminal code cap 77 Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990.
The prosecutor, Ewuola Ebenezer, told the court that Ayeni died as a result of the injuries inflicted on him by the accused.
Ebenezer urged the court not to grant the accused bail because of the nature of the offence committed, which he said was a felony.
He also prayed for adjournment so that he could obtain the advice of the police Legal Department on the case.
The defence counsel, Mr. Taiwo Osayomi, prayed the court to transfer the case to a higher court of competent jurisdiction.
He said that the magistrate’s court lacked the power to hear the case.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Simeon Ojo, ordered that the accused be remanded in the Ado-Ekiti prison and adjourned the case to July 2, for further hearing.
