Jos Power Surge: 255 Shop burnt, Scores Injured

Mr. Kabiru Lawal, is the Chairman of Grain Traders Association, Jos, he told newsmen that the fire that gutted about 255 shops and scores injured in Katako Market in Jos, Plateau State last night was as a result of power surge.
According to him : "The fire started immediately power was restored. The voltage was extremely high and this resulted into flames from some machines in some shops."

In the inferno, the grains section of the Market was mostly affected and valuables worth millions of Naira were destroyed.

Mr Kabiru Lawal commended those that were injured whom he said were visitors who volunteered to put out the fire.
He said: "I was particularly happy that the volunteers were people who had no particular stake in the market. Their total commitment was just amazing."
The chairman appealed to Plateau State government to assist the traders, some of whom he said lost everything.
Yahaya Mohammad,a victim of the inferno said he lost several bags of maize and beans to the fire. He said he also lost money he had hoped to take to the bank.
Mrs. Juni Dabin, a representative of the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, who visited the scene, expressed shock over the massive destruction.
She said that SEMA had assessed the damage and would send a report to the Plateau Govt.
